Challenges

To meet the growing demand in the markets for products that are environmentally friendly, companies are considering the environmental impact of their products from the design stage. With the Eco-design for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) taking effect on 18th July 2024, Eco-design and LCA are crucial for compliance, as the regulation expands eco-design requirements beyond energy-related products to encompass virtually all consumer goods, aiming to improve circularity, energy performance, and environmental sustainability across the EU market.

In Q4 2024, a Chinese electronics giant sought Bureau Veritas' expertise to validate its eco-design framework and verify products through a cost-effective, international third-party approach. Recognizing the constraints of individual product Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs), BV developed an innovative process certification scheme tailored to the client's needs. Impressed, the client selected BV over its incumbent provider. This resounding success has enabled BV to ramp up the pioneering service across China, with plans to replicate it in industries where eco-design principles are embraced but product LCA costs are prohibitive.
