Bureau Veritas Zambia and the Road Traffic and Safety Agency Strengthen Collaboration to Promote Fleet Safety Management Systems in Zambia
Jul. 6 2026
Bureau Veritas Zambia and the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) have strengthened their collaboration in advancing road safety and improving fleet management practices within Zambia's transport sector through the promotion of Fleet Safety Management Systems (FSMS) based on ISO 39001:2012 – Road Traffic Safety Management Systems.
As part of this strategic partnership, Bureau Veritas Zambia successfully conducted a comprehensive five-day training Programme for 30 RTSA staff from 16th to 20th June 2026. The training was designed to build RTSA's capacity in understanding, evaluating, and promoting internationally recognized fleet safety management practices among transport and logistics operators across Zambia.
The Programme combined both theoretical and practical learning experiences to provide participants with a thorough understanding of the requirements of ISO 39001:2012 and its application within fleet operations.
During the first three days, delegates participated in intensive classroom sessions covering critical aspects of Fleet Safety Management Systems, including road traffic risk management, driver competence, vehicle maintenance, operational control, performance monitoring, legal compliance, accident prevention, and continual improvement.
To ensure practical application of the knowledge gained, the participants were subsequently engaged in field-based exercises. RTSA delegates conducted practical audits at Latitude Trucking and Shingalana Transport, providing a unique opportunity to benchmark classroom learning against real operational environments. The practical assessments enabled participants to observe fleet safety systems in action, identify good practices, and gain firsthand experience in evaluating compliance with the requirements of ISO 39001:2012.
RTSA delegates accompanied Bureau Veritas Lead Auditor Mr. Tanaji Dighe during the surveillance audit of Gold Star Freight Limited, one of the transport companies certified by Bureau Veritas Zambia to ISO 39001:2012. This exposure provided valuable insights into the certification maintenance process and demonstrated how certified organizations continually monitor and improve their road traffic safety performance.
The training Programme was attended by the Country Chair of Bureau Veritas, Harrison Muchenga alongside the Chief Executive Officer of RTSA, Eng. Amon Mweemba, whose presence underscored the importance of collaboration between regulatory institutions and independent certification bodies in driving road safety excellence throughout the country.
