EC proposed 2025: exempt <50ton/year imports to simplify rules.
20% of firms account for 97%of emissions under carbon border tariff.

CRITICAL USE CASE

Bureau Veritas has provided CBAM training, advisory and reporting support globally to major industry players such as building industry and offshore renewable energy. Our work spanned from strategic and operational training, strategic planning, embedded emission calculation, data collection, as well as reporting preparation.

Challenges

The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is a key part of the EU's climate neutrality measures by 2050. It aims to prevent carbon leakage by imposing a carbon price on imports, incentivize producers to adopt cleaner technologies while also generating funds for renewable-energy initiatives.

From 2026, importers shall buy emissions-based CBAM certificates for imports such as steel, cement, aluminum, fertilizers, electricity, and hydrogen. During the preliminary transitional phase, running from 2024 to 2025, global businesses trading with the EU must prepare for compliance by reporting their embedded emissions data
